Lake City Community Center to host rock concert, April 21

By CLAYTON PARK

Leon Johnson's love of music and record collecting led him and his wife, Nancy, to start Cranium's Cool Collectibles a few years ago, so it should come as no surprise that he is now about to try his hand at a new profession: music impresario.

Johnson will make his debut as "Phil Moore Productions" on Saturday, April 21, when he hosts a live rock concert with music by Billy Moon and Rockin' Teenage Combo at the Lake City Community Center. The concert will begin at 8 p.m.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Lake City Western Vigilantes, a volunteer organization that raises funds for local youth groups.

Johnson, whose business is now called Cranium's Coffee and Collectibles, came up with the idea for the concert because of his desire to see more community events in the Lake City area as well as his interest in helping community service groups, such as the Vigilantes.

He also thought it would be a great way to help two promising local bands in Billy Moon and Rockin' Teenage Combo.

Billy Moon is a band with strong Lake City ties. It features the talents of singer-songwriter Kristy Smith, her husband Steve Smith on drums, lead guitarist Bruce Hazen and bass player Alan Paisley.

Steve Smith is owner of the Seattle Drum School in Lake City, while Paisley and his wife Ann are managers of ArtWood (formerly known as the Cedar Park Arts Center), which is also in Lake City. Hazen isn't a North Seattle resident, but he has impressive credentials, having once played in the Seattle band Hi-Fi, led by legendary British singer Ian Matthews of Fairport Convention and Matthews Southern Comfort fame.

Johnson describes Billy Moon's music as some of the best he has heard in a long while, adding that he played the band's album in his car all summer - high praise from a serious record collector like himself. "Rather than get tired of it, the more I played it, the more I liked it," says Johnson, who describes Kristy Smith as "a tremendous songwriter," and the band's overall sound as "straight forward, unpretentious rock. They just play great music."

Johnson describes Rockin' Teenage Combo, which will be the evening's opening act, as an energetic rockabilly band that also has a Lake City connection: One of its members is a student at the Seattle Drum School.

If all goes well, Johnson hopes to host more benefit concerts in the future at the Lake City Community Center, which is located at 12531 28th Ave. NE, two blocks west of Lake City Way.

Tickets to the Billy Moon/Rockin' Teenage Combo concert can be purchased for $9 apiece at the door or in advance at Cranium's, 12301 Lake City Way NE, or at the Seattle Drum School, 12510 15th Ave. NE. For more information, call Leon Johnson at 364-1924. (
